Foursquare Articles of Faith – Article 6

ARTICLE VI. REPENTANCE AND ACCEPTANCE

  • “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” (Rom. 5:1,2)
  • “‘To give knowledge of salvation to His people By the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God, With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us; To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.’” (Luke 1:77-79)
  • “…the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.” (Jn. 6:37)

Believe and receive, that’s what Christ asks us to do. I love that whenever we come to Him, we can boldly know that He will never cast us aside. What a wonderful thing that is. When we come to him, with a repentant heart, He embraces us with love that no one can even fathom. His love and grace quenches this sinners thirst for forgiveness and acceptance. It is the dayspring from on high that pours out upon this dry crusty soul. Let us not take for granted the grace that we freely receive that gives us such peace with God through Christ our Lord. Let us rejoice knowing that He has given us amazing hope, hope that we will be in glory with Him.

I feel like there’s a lot of overlap of these two articles, but I’ll do my best to separate them in my reflection. I see this as part two of salvation, God did His part and graced us with salvation, now there’s the human part, through the leading of the Holy Spirit, we must repent of our sin, and accept the free gift of salvation that He wants to give to His creation. But here’s a question for you, what do we need to be repenting of? Sure, you could argue when you violate one of the ten commandments you must repent, and I would agree, but what about everything else? I’m reminded of Paul when he’s talking about sin to the Romans in Romans 14, while eating meat offered to an idol isn’t sin to Paul, if it might cause a fellow believer to stumble, he must not eat! Maybe it’s a view we hold loosely or a habit we have that in and of itself is not sin, doing it around another believer who is weaker that us, would be something to repent of.
