The land of expectations robs us of living in the fullness God designed for us. When we were created, God had a vision for who we would be. We live consumed by things we should be doing, what other people think we should be doing, and miss the calling on our life. We walk on eggshells not to disrupt the world around us, or upset the roles we have assumed as our identity. Walking in our identity of Christ means shrugging off the expectations of others, and stepping into the expectations of God. Who he says we are is far more powerful than anything we could say about ourselves: we are called.
Matthew 3:16-17 After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”
Main point:
We Go with the Holy Spirit
When it was time for Jesus to step out in ministry He did so prepared for what God was asking of him. He spent time before God gathering direction and purpose, and yet He was still faced with temptation, uncertainty, and concern. God is going to ask us to do things that feel unnerving at times, that make us feel unsure of ourselves. Because ultimately, God is asking us to be somebody that feels unnerving to the world. There is confidence in knowing everything we experience Jesus not only paved the way, but also experienced His own calling and Holy Spirit guidance.
