Article 7: New Birth
-
We are all made new in Christ. When a person surrenders their life to Christ, their spirit comes a live and their heart is transformed. We are made new, as the old gospel song says, “I’m not the same man I used to be.”
- “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Cor. 5:17)
- “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Gal. 2:20)
- “being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation 6 by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed.” (Rom. 3:24,25)
For someone who has been a Christian my whole life, the idea of new birth seems out of reach for me. I hear stories all the time of people who have had radical conversions, transformed lives touched by the power of the Lord and I wonder what that would be like. I wonder sometimes if it would be possible for me to be again, born again? I know I can’t, but there’s a part of me that has always wanted a radical encounter with Jesus. I have had wonderful times with Jesus and times I can look back at and see that the Lord was with me and speaking to me, but I’m not sure I can say I’ve been transformed. I know Christ can and does transform people and change lives and I love to see Him do it, I just don’t feel like I’ve had that Damascus road experience, like Paul did, and that’s ok because I feel that I have always known the love of Christ in my life.
